Memphis Music Spotlight

George Hunt – Visionary Artist & Cultural Icon

George Hunt was a premier American visual artist whose career spanned over five decades, becoming the definitive painter of the Southern experience. His work gained international acclaim for its vibrant “Mojo Art” style, most notably through his iconic “Conjure Series” and his 28-year tenure as the official artist for the Beale Street Music Festival. In 2002, he was honored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with a solo exhibition, and his painting “America: Jazz, Blues & Rock ‘n’ Roll” was featured on a United States postage stamp.

Beginning his journey in Memphis, Tennessee, Hunt used his canvas to bridge the gap between the Civil Rights Movement and the soul of the Delta Blues. Much like the legendary musicians of Stax Records, Hunt’s work was deeply rhythmic, capturing the struggle, joy, and resilience of the African American experience. From his celebrated posters for the Year of the Blues to his tributes to the Little Rock Nine, George Hunt’s art remains a cornerstone of Memphis culture, ensuring that the history of the South is seen, felt, and never forgotten.
